Seven Secrets of Writing Letters to the Editor

  • Shorter is better. Get to the point quickly. Aim for about 100-150 words (our LTE tool counts words for you!).
  • Make it compelling. Grab the reader in the first sentence with something provocative or entertaining.
  • End with an image. Create a metaphor that visually sticks in the reader's mind.
  • Don't make your letter too long. You only have a few words.
  • Put passion into your words. If you feel strongly about something, let those emotions show.
  • Proof your copy for spelling and grammar mistakes.
  • And, most importantly, make sure the facts you cite are accurate!
